Demonstrate Engineering Skills
Definition
Demonstrating engineering skills is the use and understanding of the technical skills an engineer uses in practice. This competency focuses on our ability to function as traditional engineers. This is important to me because I need to be able to comprehend and make use of the material that I want students to learn about so it is practical and applicable to them.
Prior/Current Work
The only potential application to this competency occurred during the last year of my undergraduate career. In my undergraduate research experience, I created machine learning algorithms to determine how accurately machinery could estimate students' class results based on demographics, using the Java programming language. This was a topic briefly talked about in my undergraduate courses, but the course dedicated to to machine learning was considered an advanced level course. Since this algorithm is often used in industry, I consider this as applying to this competency.
Future Work
Currently, I plan to achieve this competency through obtaining a master's degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering. I will be able to take several courses focused on advanced engineering topics and continue to make progress toward working in an administrative role in an engineering department through this route. At minimum, I will use the courses I take to satisfy the "Secondary Engineering Expertise" section in our program's plan of study to achieve this competency. I will use either a final grade or project in any of the courses I take to demonstrate this competency.
