Explain and Critique Education Policy
Definition
Explaining and critiquing education policy displays our understanding of the policies at work and the problems they implicitly cause. This competency is similar to the think critically and reflectively competency in that it involves recognizing the current systems put in place and evaluating them. However, this competency focuses on explicitly making ourselves knowledgeable about educational policies through involvements on collegiate committees and professional societies. As an administrator or faculty member in a collegiate environment, this competency would be essential as I work toward advancing education.
Prior/Current Work
I wrote a paper critiquing and analyzing the Computer Science For All Initiative that was established by the Obama administration in 2016. This paper was written for my Leadership, Policy, and Change final project in which I used change and leadership theories to give suggestions on improving the policy.
Future Work
To achieve this competency, I am looking forward to taking the Leadership, Policy, and Change course in STEM Education. I believe that it will provide me with a vast amount of information in relation to policies and how they are maintained and developed. As someone who is passionate about leadership and interested in administrative work, this course would also be a great first step for me in that regard. The artifact that I would present to demonstrate this competency would be my grade or final project. In addition, I am considering involvement in the Engineering Education Graduate Student Association, as I may be introduced to policy work on a local scale through that organization.
